BUCS Competitions

Our more experienced members have the opportunity to try out for one of our three teams that compete at different league levels: Championship (1st), Trophy (2nd), and friendly (3rd). To try out, members must be competent enough to perform a novice level dressage test and jump a 90cm show jumping course on a wide variety of contrasting horses and ponies. Trials take place during the first few weeks of term, followed by an in-house trial competition. Successful riders will compete in teams of four in BUCS competitions throughout the year and are expected to train weekly.

We also have a development squad for riders progressing towards team level. This allows them to develop their riding in a more sophisticated manner, and gain a greater appreciation for how to work a horse in the best possible way. Development squad members have the option of training every week, but are expected to train at least once a fortnight.

Held under British University and College Sport rules, competitions involve four teams from surrounding universities, each with four members. The competition consists of a Novice level dressage test and a 80-90cm course of show jumps (similar to combined training). Riders have to compete on unknown horses, and are judged on how well they perform compared to the riders from opposing universities who are riding the same horse. With competitions at all four universities throughout terms one and two, teams and individuals have to opportunity to qualify for regionals, progressing on to national championships.
